It’s that time of year again. Just when you thought it was safe to watch your TV… The Discover Channel has brought it’s usual bevy of shark-beauty back to our TV sets. It’s impressive just how many different shark related programs a person will watch. Is it because sharks are a mixture of horror and wonder to most of us? The sheer size and strength of these ‘perfect killing machines’ is quite amazing. Is it the perception that they could always be lurking just under the surface of the waters that we swim in? Is it the teeth? Whatever the reason, a lot of eyes are on whatever Discovery Channel is airing this week.
The stories are always entertaining, but what always impresses me is the footage. The bravery it takes to swim with these massive creatures is something that I cannot conceive. But these divers aren’t just out to get some regular underwater footage. It seems like those days are long gone. Its all about the extreme angles. Guys are getting footage of the inside of a shark’s mouth while it is biting. Other guys actually attached a camera to a shark’s fin!
I love it.
While we get to witness the actions of these incredible creatures from the safety of our living-rooms, these filmmakers are bringing us amazing shots of sharks that do more than just excite us. The reason we get a lot of these awesome shots is to better understand these wonderful creatures. They are at the top of their food-chain and vital part of their Eco-system. Are they scary? Yes, but in the same way lions are scary. Once we better understand these extraordinary creatures, misconceptions (thanks for all the nightmares, Jaws) will start to fall away.
In the meantime, keep the footage coming.
